Their studio perfectionism is never better served than here. This greatest hits is simple and to the point, a perfect collection for anyone looking to get the basic idea (and hits) without committing to a more serious relationship. The harmonies, Paul Simon's masterful songwriting, Garfunkel's soaring choirboy voice, are all here. --Rob O'Connor

 Four songs are from a live recording August 5, 2010

Seeing as this album was originally released in 1972, Amazon should provide an accurate description so that buyers are aware that four of the hits are live versions and not the original album versions. The live tracks are excellent: Other reviewers have mentioned the wonderful version of For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her; Homeward Bound and Kathy's Song are also excellent - the live Feelin' Groovy is a bit goofy to me. The rest of the tracks are the original recordings, but evidently an artistic decision was made to fade the clapping from the live tracks into the introductions of some of the studio recordings. I like the attempt to do something interesting with a greatest hits album, but Amazon should accurately describe the recording so buyers are aware of what they're buying.

I bought this CD for my newborn/infant granddaughter who never wanted to relax, much less go to sleep. "Sounds of Silence" is especially calming for her. The entire CD is better than any baby lullaby music. Perhaps not what Simon and Garfunkel intended or what potential buyers are looking for in a review, but amazingly awesome music for ALL generations, including grandma who feels a touch of nostalgia - I listened to this album when I was 12-13 years old.

As most other reviewers have stated, the recordings here truly are some of Simon & Garfunkel's greatest. What makes this an essential album -- IN ADDITION TO the duo's regular albums -- is the inclusion of four live cuts and an alternative take of "America" that don't appear on those earlier albums. These aren't just rarities that are nice to have; they do much more, providing a fuller picture of duo, flowing together with the previously released cuts in a seamless whole that stands by itself as a great album.
Unfortunately, Columbia/Sony has neglected to remaster this outstanding collection. While there are other, bigger S&G collections that do have better sound quality, none has the concise yet masterfully selected group of songs that this album has.
Please remaster it!!!

This music brought back some memories. The music was always great - these two always had a great blending of voices. Part of the album was recorded live. They improvised a little bit from the originals on the live recordings, and naturally they were excellent, but I'm a stick-in-the mud who likes the oldies exactly the way I remembered them back in my youth. Ah, well - good music no matter what.
