Product Description
weld 1 [weld]
- verb (used with object)
1. to unite or fuse (as pieces of metal) by hammering, compressing, or the like, esp. after rendering soft or pasty by heat, and sometimes with the addition of fusible material like or unlike the pieces to be united.

I m not a welder, at least not in the typical sense of the trade. But my daddy is, by way of the 2300 hours of training that certified him, courtesy of the Atlanta Federal penitentiary.

I myself couldn t put a rod in the thingamajig. And heavy equipment makes me nervous. But I do tend to fuse things, confuse things, sometimes with sparks, sometimes like a lava melt, sometimes backed by a tank of compressed air ready to blow, sometimes quiet as a slow leak. The beauty of writing, recording, gigging and the like, to me is, when it s right, it comes together with a glow in my soul, so intense it pierces a hot afternoon like a hissing firecracker. Don t look at it directly...it ll burn your eyes! mama used to yell. I stood bare footed hanging on the inside of the screen door of our Florida patio. I loved watching Cook s Welding at work in our tiny dirt yard. It was so hard not to look. Couldn t help but look. And the rawness of my new album Welder is case and point. Apparently, I still can t help but look.

Album Description
2010 album from the Country singer/songwriter. While she may look like an American Idol-styled Country vocalist, Cook is a Country outlaw at heart with her musical roots soaked in old-school Country values.

5 out of 5 stars A little " apron strings" anytime   August 1, 2010

This is like having Ms. Cook's radio show at your beck and call. This cd is very intriguing with lots of changes.

5 out of 5 stars gets better and better   July 31, 2010

As a big fan I wasn't too sure when I first listened to the new album. But after 2 or 3 listens I'm completely hooked. Great variety in the writing with rocking numbers and powerful ballads. And if you get the chance, go and see her live!

2 out of 5 stars A new direction for Cook, and not one that is suited for her music.   July 25, 2010

I have to agree with Bill Russell's review here. I really enjoyed Cook's previous CD "Balls" and recently saw her in concert in an acoustic set. The songs came across fine there. Don Was, who does mostly rock albums, produced this album. Now if T-Bone Burnet had done it, it might have been less jarring and consistent.

There are some nice slow tempo numbers that show off her voice the best. "Not California" is one. It's one of the five or so songs not written by Cook. And Rodney Crowell's back up vocal works nicely. The previous number "El Camino" is a rocker with Cook in her "tough girl" mode. She's in that mood for "Yes to Booty" and "Snake in the Bed".

Though I think she lives in Nashville now (I'm not certain) she has a lot of Nashville musicians with her here. But she's a Central State Florida woman and that image is one she tries to present. Speaking of presenting, the booklet included is loaded with Playboy (or rather Maxim Magazine-like) photos of her in skimpy outfits and sexy poses. If she wants listeners to appreciate her words, those pages could have held the lyrics. I guess it all depends on which direction she wants her career to take.

I rarely give two stars to a CD but this one is so inconsistent (except for "Not California" and the opening track "All The Time" that I can only suggest that folks listen to the samples of the tracks before committing to it. Then decide for yourself. As for me, I'd love Cook to take one step backward to where she was for "Balls"

5 out of 5 stars This is REAL country music!   June 30, 2010
Kenneth G. Brown (Chevak, AK United States)
I love real country music (Hank, Merle, Willie, Loretta and Buck) but I detest what has passed for Top 40 country music for the last 20 years. If Hashville would just be honest and call Top 40 country "Seventies Soft Rock with Fiddle or Steel Guitar plus Obligatory Hat", I wouldn't get so wound up. Anyway, Elizabeth Cook is never going to get rich making this wonderful, down-to-earth, genuine country music, but I don't think she minds very much. This is the real deal. Enjoy it before it disappears completely.

5 out of 5 stars I love this woman   June 25, 2010

Love the album. Great writing and execution. She's great and her choices for collabs show the great instincts and musicology she demonstrates every morning on Outlaw Country. She's also one of my favorite DJs.
