Product Description k.d. lang is a once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. It's no wonder she has, over the course of more than two decades, attracted such collaborators as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, along with admirers like Philip Glass and Madonna. As lang has matured, she continues to surprise and impress. With the 2008 release of her self-penned, self-produced Nonesuch disc Watershed, Rolling Stone declared, "k.d. lang does what the gifted and the lucky always should: improve as time passes." The Times of London agreed: "It's a quirk of the music industry that one of the sexiest, most sensual voices in all of pop music comes not from some raven-tressed siren in a glitter-dress but a middle-aged woman with a utility haircut and a penchant for male tailoring." lang herself called the album "a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch."
This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.
Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience.
Album Description 2010 two CD collection from the singer, songwriter, performer and once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. Short Memory July 23, 2010 Tim Brough (Springfield, PA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Almost every song on this double disc "Recollection" of k.d. lang's finest is a gem. I can't argue with any of them. Her voice is a treasure of emotional intensity and vulnerability, and her interpretive skills are with few rivals in modern music. So why not five stars?
Well, frankly, the collection is skimpy. There's easily another half hour's space available between the two discs, room enough for at least one song from "Angel With A Lariat" and "Live By Request" or a couple more songs from "All You Can Eat." Or a few more one-off singles, like her duet with Andy Bell on "No More Tears." At least they did us the favor of only repeating one song from the "Reintarnation" set ("Trail Of Broken Hearts"). Oh well.
However, the second CD of odds and ends totally justifies buying this set. It pulls a batch of songs out of soundtrack obscurity, like her original duet of "Cryin'" from the forgettable Jon Cryer movie "Hiding Out." Or her tear jerking rendition of "So In Love" from the "Red Hot and Blue" charity project. There's also a new song, the sweet "Beautifully Combined." And while I am not all that thrilled that two versions of "Hallelujah" are here, you have to admit, her version rivals the late Jeff Buckley's for goosebump inducement.
Overall, "Recollection" is far from a bad collection of k.d.'s work. It's just that there is so much more to hear that I kept waiting for more songs to come out of my stereo once the discs were inserted.

A wonderful compilation July 12, 2010 Reid Branson (Seattle, WA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I always find compilations a bit suspect, especially when they include "previously unreleased material". One can't help but wonder if there wasn't a perfectly fine reason these were never released, specifically because they simply aren't all that good; they didn't make the cut. This is not the case here, though, as lang lends her lovely voice and writing skills (she co-wrote three of the 11 previously unreleased songs) to this effort. I am left to wonder why some of these superb renditions were never put out there, and her version of Lennon and McCartney's "Golden Slumbers/The End" is particularly beautiful.
Of course, much of these are not in fact being heard here for the first time. I am not enough of an aficionado to know the entire history of these songs, but I know that Jane Siberry released this version of "Calling All Angels" years ago. I also believe the duet with Tony Bennett was released by him (I know I've heard it before), and I have heard her version of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" prior to this. Still and all, it is great to have them all in one place, and to have an alternate version of her stupendous rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is an added bonus.
The first disk of this set is not as inspiring, simply because it is something of a miniature Greatest Hits, and there is little need to release them here except to beef up what would otherwise have been a rather thin compilation. As with any such selection of 11 songs, there will be debate over which should have been included, but I think it would be indisputable that better choices may have been made.
All in all, though, buy this album for the second disk of "unreleased" songs and you will not be disappointed. A great overview of a splendid talent.
Amazing June 25, 2010 skitty An amazing CD set. Love all of the music. A must for your music library.
This is the best! June 22, 2010 B. Wilson (Harrisburg PA) What a pleasure listening to this CD, k. d. lang's voice is truly amazing! I still can not decide which version of "Hallelujah" I like better. she is a true artist!
