Perhaps maturity is less attractive, less exciting BUT . . . September 4, 2010 M. Cagney (Western Springs, IL USA) (Lord willing and the creek don't rise) we'll all be there. Sarah's words still ring with truths and her voice, well, her voice is, as always, dead on its way to your soul. Perhaps the drama of the earlier CDs (which I admit still set me on a nostalgia tour) is gone but the blues of life experience have settled in and there is a lasting, yet, austere beauty in that. Listen to the words. You've been there or you will be there; as usual, Sarah speaks for us all.
Lasting music grows on us. Not the first time. Maybe not the eighth time. But listen once more and that ninth time might grab you and, somewhere deep in your soul, you'll say "I know, oh, I know." I have learned to trust Sarah and her music. I began this review as a 3 star . . . I stopped. I listened deep within me to the voice, to the words and, sure enough, I highlighted, deleted and, at age 61 (talk about mature), realized "I know."
That voice. I always describe Sarah as a songstress who would be making music whether we listened or not (for frame of reference I put Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Ray LaMontagne, David Gray in that same group); where has she been for 7 years? Singing and growing up. Hopefully, the same place we've been . . .
Wonderful as always September 4, 2010 James Zorrer (Hillsborough, NJ United States) I loved Sarah from the first album. This cd however, I had to give it a chance unlike her other cd's that were GREAT right out. Sarah has changed her style but the cd has grown on me and I wish her the best. You could sing the telephone book and I will always be a devoted fan.
This CD is FANTASTIC !!!!!! August 25, 2010 Joyce Johnson (St. Louis, MO USA) This is Sarah's best CD ever! I'm just now listening to it for the 3rd time and I just got it yesterday. I like all the songs and my favorite is Illusions of Bliss. I also like Loving You is Easy and Forgiveness. They are all good and almost all written by Sarah herself. I highly recommend this CD to all SM fans and to those who are yet to become fans.
Anything by Sarah McLachaln is wonderful August 22, 2010 claire marie mensack I have a few CD's by Sarah McLachlan. I enjoy listening to her music in the evenings when all is quite. Her music is melodious, calming and simply wonderful!
Another goldmine August 20, 2010 G. L. M. Besseling (The Netherlands) After seven years of waiting Sarah McLachlan finally released a new studio album. A hiatus during which Sarah released the following albums:
Bloom (remix album, 2005)
Mirrorball (the Complete Concert, 2006)
Wintersong (Christmas album, 2006)
Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff vol. 2, 2008)
Closer (best of, 2008)
But a collection of new material is what every fan wants more than anything else, right?
Still, not every McLachlan fan is as thrilled with this new collection of songs as I am.
Some argue that Sarah never surpassed 1993's Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. But in my honost opinion, both Surfacing (1997) and Afterglow (2003) were pure goldmines. I agree, they were a total departure from Fumbling. But a true artist does not repeat himself. Did Van Gogh paint his Sunflowers twice?
Fumbling was pretty dark (category Joni Mitchell's Blue perhaps?), Surfacing confused and Afterglow at peace. Now take these three albums, turn them into one et voila... you've got the right category for Laws of Illusion.
Some say that's what makes this album incoherent, but I prefer to say this fact makes Laws the ultimate Sarah McLachlan studioalbum to date. It has something for everyone. While this album was made right after her divorce, it's not a bitter collection at all. Yes she is hurt, she is confused, but at the same time, she sounds stronger than ever! This album will inspire many people who go through the same ordeal as Sarah has been through.
Okay, she included Don't Give Up On Us and U Want Me 2 (songs she added as bonustracks on best of collection Closer 2008) again. But they fit prefectly with the rest of the new songs, so I forgive her for this. And because she did so, we've got a total of twelve songs instead of ten. There's also a bonus piano version of the song Love Come.
I'm not going to discuss every song here, Laws of Illusion deserves to be listend to, again and again.
Sarah McLachlan is back with one of the best albums of 2010!
