5 out of 5 stars Great CD. Great service!   February 6, 2009
Lavender Girl (Xanadu)
Received my Skin CD in a timely fashion.

This cd, by the late great Ephraim Lewis is amazing, and I'm so thankful I found it!

5 out of 5 stars Play this CD for someone and watch the response.   June 8, 2008

A litle story for you. Back in 1992, a friend of mine who was a diehard heavy metal fan needed a ride. I had just put the SKIN CD on. I figured after a few songs he would go on a rant about how bad it sucked (he ranted about EVERYTHING that wasn't metal). He was unusually quiet so I asked him if everything was alright. He then asked what CD it was. "Ephraim Lewis", I said. I'm figuring here comes the rant. Instead he says "This guy is F****** Awesome! " He even asked me to stop at the mall so he could pick it up. (You couldn't burn CD's back then).

I guess when an unmistakable talent comes along, even the most scrutinizing ears must respect and admire that talent.
Please pick this CD up and play it for your friends. Watch the response you'll get. Plain and simple, it is a masterpiece.

P.S. No disrespect to SEAL fans (I am one), but there is no doubt that Ephraim is a far greater singer. The guy's voice is simply unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Still sounds good 14 years later   December 4, 2006

I guess you could call him a one hit wonder since this was Ephraim Lewis' only album, but had he not died so early, I'm sure that there would be many more successful albums from him. The lyrics of his song speak to his pain

SKIN
SHELTER ME...

SEARCHING FOR A WAY OUT
OF SO MUCH PAIN
SOMETIMES TO HURT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING
LET'S LIVE AGAIN
I'M A PUBLIC FACE WITH A PRIVATE LIFE
YOU WANNA GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO TOUCH
WEAVE YOUR LIES 'COS I CAN'T HIDE
NEVER TOUCH MY SOUL I NEED THAT MUCH

IS MY SKIN JUST A VEIL I'M WEARING
PROTECT ME FROM THE WORLD

(REPEAT)

SO WITH THIS ARMOUR TO COVER ME
FROM TORTURED SKIES
I'LL BURN THE BODY - BREATHE POISONED WINE
ONLY LAUGHTER AND FORGETTING
KEEPS MY MIND FROM THE DEVIL INSIDE
LIKE A CIRCLE THERE IS NO RESOLVE
A LITTLE PEACE IS BETTER THAN NONE....

The details of his death are debated -- did he jump from the four story apartment building in W. Hollywood, or did the taser gun that the police fired at him knock him down. He was acting irratically, naked climbing from balcony to balcony. It's said that someone slipped something into his drink while he was celebrating his contract deal with Elektra in the US. He had recently broken up with a long term girlfriend and had a male lover and was for the first time expressing that side of himself.

His voice is beautiful, his lyrics rich. This is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars A Neo-Soul Masterpiece   October 31, 2006
'Dsmoove' Valentine (Upland, CA USA)
I bought this wonderful project due to Ephraim Lewis's death-as a tribute to music itself. I have heard "Drowning in your Eyes" on the radio for a long time and I always wanted to get the artist's album who recorded that song!! The whole album is perfect for going to the beach with the sunroof open as you enter into a sweet melody of r&b neo soul in your car. I'm very pleased with the CD...a keeper!!

3 out of 5 stars It's Pretty Good   June 21, 2006
Gayle L. Edmond (New York State)
I too bought this for "Drowning in your Eyes", but after repeated listenings, I found myself singing with other cuts. "I really like "World Between Us" and my favorite is "Hold On". I guess Seal is close to the TYPE of music he sang, but his voice is slightly different. It's great listening music, kind of mid tempo, you can't really boogie to it, but it's also good driving music. I wish there were a couple more songs on it, since we won't be getting anything new from him. "It Can't Be Forever" is kind of spooky and haunting, and different from the other cuts. I recommend this CD, but know that it's not your typical R&B. I recommend listing to the snippits before you buy it. Because after repeated listening, I must say, it really grew on me. I know it doesn't sound like it, but I recommend it!
